Statement:

I make work that captures moments of energy, movement, and impact, perpetuating their significance in a way that resembles the permanent change that those moments can have on your life.  This stems from the idea that the most important moments in your life, the moments that shape you the most as a person, happen in a split second. I work with materials that best capture energy and movement, which is why I’m drawn to plaster, as it allows for energetic splattering and manipulation in liquid form, then solidifying to freeze that movement in time. I also work heavily in print because of the spontaneous mixing of color I can achieve, which can then be replicated and perpetuated in editions.

In my work, I focus on using process and material as a way to convey impact, movement, and energy through the collagraph print process I have developed. This process uses sheet wood, plaster, and ink to create abstract, textured, complex prints that serve as a physically immortalized moment of impact from the process. I use color palettes that draw from abstract landscape painters like JMW Turner and Caspar Friedrich, and apply ink in a very painterly style similar to the way Chris Ro applies the word “Prainting” to his work, which combines print materials and techniques with a painterly approach and gestural qualities. Within my work, this creates an image that captures intense energy both conceptually and graphically. This approach enables the material to contribute to the concept and final image of the work. By allowing mistakes or new moments that the material presents to remain and guide the work, which creates a much more complex conversation between concept, material, and moment within my work.
